Dr. Laurie’s Story
My dedication to this topic stems from my personal battle against migraines. I suffered from classic migraine with aura. My first headache occurred back in 1979 when I was only 11 years old. At that time the school nurses didn’t even recognize the condition, and because I never had a fever associated with my headaches (as you’ll find with most migraines) I was treated as though I was making up my illness. I wasn’t formally diagnosed until nearly 7 years later while away at college. Once they ruled out brain tumor as a diagnosis, I was formally labeled a migraine patient and was very happy to finally be validated for the condition that alienated me for so long.
At first I only got them a few times a year, and there was seemingly no rhyme or reason why they would hit. As I got older, the frequency of my headaches increased significantly. At my worst point, I was getting 4-6 migraines every month. As migraineurs know, one attack can translate to 1-2 days of bed time and 1-4 days feeling out of sorts. Several attacks back to back can literally put your life on hold for weeks.
I got through undergraduate school, a doctoral program, and running a busy practice all while trying to cope with the sudden onset of ‘the aura’ and the killer headache that ensued. It created many ruined vacations, many needs for fill-in help in my office, and many instances of having to pull off the road while driving because I just couldn’t see with the visual disturbance!
There were only 1-2 medications that the doctors could suggest to try and they didn’t work for me. As a rule I tend to be very sensitive to prescription drugs, and the side affects of the migraine medications weren’t something I could readily cope with. During the course of my education, I also understood the wear and tear on the body that drugs cause and I wanted to avoid them whenever possible. With this decision made, doctors could not provide me with any natural alternatives to try to combat my condition.
Over time I realized several triggers that seemed to make me more prone to attack. Things like MSG in snack chips or Chinese food, lack of sleep, excess stress, and having a spinal bone in my neck out of alignment all could make me more prone to the monster. I also noticed that when I had an attack, I would suffer from gastrointestinal disturbances and very stiff muscles in my shoulders and neck. Visual disturbances were the norm, along with sensitivity to light and sound. And occasionally, I would even lose my ability to form words which was very scary. The headache itself would manifest on the side of my head and would throb without mercy with a pain that I can now claim to be equal to that of childbirth.
As I went through my doctorate program and all of the continuing education that comes with getting licensed, I began my quest for true health. Not migraine-centered, but focused on being the healthiest person I could be. At one of my post-graduate lectures my husband and I listened to a speaker present on the importance of omega long-chain fatty acids in the diet. These are substances that are lacking significantly in the modern diet but are vital nutrients for proper bodily function.
To make a long story come to an end, we began taking a supplement for omega long-chain fatty acids. We found we had more energy, needed less sleep, aches and pains went away, and we had better mental acuity. All of the things the presenter had told us. I however, found something even more profound. My migraines went away! I went from having 4-6 per month to having 1-2 per year and the 1-2 per year are so drastically decreased in intensity I’m not sure I would even call them migraines anymore.
One tablespoon a day keeps my monster away. This led us on our quest to show correlation with nutritional deficiency and migraine headaches. But it’s not just me, our patients have seen results similar to what I have seen. Please click the button on the left side of the page for more testamonials.
It’s been over 5 years now since I’ve gotten my life back and it is beyond liberating. We enjoy vacations, spur of the moment activities, I drive our daughter to events in town and I don’t have fear of having to pull off the road. The biggest change for me is psychological in that I no longer feel that something else has control of my life. I am in control of my life and I don’t let worry keep me from getting into the action anymore!
